Gazela Primeiro Stay Aboard Policy

This document outlines the responsibilities and expectations of those staying aboard the barkentine Gazela Primeiro. This is not a contract, but a signed agreement of the responsibilities that persons staying aboard the vessel must perform in order to continue to stay aboard the vessel.

Staying aboard the vessel is a privilege, not a right. Anyone staying aboard must remember that the vessel is a community space, not anyone's home, and must treat all other Guild members with respect and dignity.

General Eligibility

  • Show proficiencies with opening and closing the ship and conducting a boat check before being allowed to stay aboard.

  • Be a current member of the PSPG unless given specific approval from the Vessel Manager.

Expectations for Overnight / Weekend Guests

  • Occupy no more than one bunk per person.

  • All personal belongings should be contained in one's bunk and foot locker.

  • Keep personal belongings out of public spaces (such as keeping shower items out of the head when not in use). PSPG is not responsible for your personal property.

Be Familiar with Emergency Procedures

Fire - In the event of a fire that is too big to extinguish with a wall mounted fire extinguisher, exit the boat and call the Coast Guard. (215-271-4800) This number is also posted in each vessel's main entrance.

MOB (Man Overboard) - If someone falls into the water, throw them a life ring and call the Coast Guard. (215-271-4800)

Taking on Water - If you suspect that the vessel is taking on water, immediately evacuate the vessel and call the Coast Guard.  (215-271-4800)

Warnings and Dismissals

Anyone who violates any PSPG policies, or otherwise creates disharmony aboard the vessel will receive a written warning from the Marine Committee. Upon the third warning, the person will be required to vacate the vessel. The committee reserves the right to require the immediate removal of anyone found to be stealing, threatening or using violence, or other extreme or illegal behavior.

Expectations for Guests Staying Longer Than a Weekend

Be a Good Ship-keeper

  • Check the dock lines, fenders, and chafe gear daily.

  • Keep all lines neatly coiled and hung.

  • Make sure that the vessel looks neat and tidy to those passing on the dock.

  • Perform a deck wash weekly (at least), if there is no rain to wet the deck.

  • Sweep and mop belowdecks weekly.

  • Ensure a boat check is done before going to bed. (boat check PDF link)

  • Keep the galley, salon, heads, hold, and focs’l neat and tidy.

  • Sound potable water and blackwater at least every two weeks and refill potable as necessary.

  • Mind the usage of electrical appliances and lights: when lights are not in use on a non-weekend (workday), they should be turned off; red lights and white lights shall not be on at the same time.

  • Ensure adequate ventilation by opening hatches, weather permitting.

  • ❄️In Winter: Maintain the minimum heating in the galley and engine room necessary to prevent freezing of pipes (only the forward head is to be heated for comfort, within reason).

  • Trash containing food must be taken off of the ship every night and placed by the trash cans on Penn's Landing.

  • Ensure the vessel is locked at night and when no one is aboard.

  • Alert Penn's Landing security of any unauthorized people boarding the vessel. Do not confront boarders at night- call security.

  • Those staying aboard should fix any issues they notice that they are capable of safely fixing themselves (such as moving chafe gear). If there is an issue that cannot be handled alone, contact the Vessel Manager.

Be a Good Shipmate

All persons shall treat each other with understanding and respect and each shall recognize that they are all equals and that none among them make the rules governing staying aboard. In addition, the following general rules are to be followed:

  • Be subject to an evaluation after the first 30 days, and then every three months.

  • Submit a weekly report, on Sundays, of work completed and hours worked to the Marine Committee.

  • No non-work related open flames, candles, barbeques, camp stove

  • Be mindful of making others uncomfortable with your actions, manner of dress, words, or noises while others are trying to sleep.

  • Lights in the focs’l are to be turned to red and quiet is to be observed between the hours of 2200 and 0700. Red lights are to be turned off at all other times.
