FIELD TRIPS

Explore Gazela
PSPG offers unique educational opportunities for students through the preservation of maritime history and the stewardship of our historical ships, including the tall ship Gazela–built in 1901 as a Portuguese cod-fishing ship. The official tall ship of the City of Philadelphia, Gazela serves as an interactive, outdoor classroom on the Delaware River waterfront and inspires interest in the maritime world and STEM fields.
Gazela will remain dockside during field trips and is not available for sailing.

All educational programming includes a deck tour of Gazela for your group. Field trips typically last 2-3 hours between drop-off and pickup depending on the nature of your program and the size of your group.

Pull, Push, Sink, & Float: Math and Physics on the Delaware River
Students will rotate activities creating simple machines related to the mechanics of operating a tall ship. Fractions and measuring will be used in the process of building a paper model boat and exploring how math is used in repairs and navigation.
Being a Good Shipmate: Team Building and Career Exploration
Team-building and problem solving are the focus as students learn what it means to work together as a team and be a good shipmate. Students will role play in positions that give them a window into what it is like to work on a boat and be responsible for a task and one another.
Sailing Through History: Art, Ecology, and Society
Along the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers, Philadelphia was an epicenter during the industrial revolution. Students will spend time learning about the industrial timeline and its impact on society while diving into the ecology of the area, why it looks like it does today, and how it was changed over time.
