Stay Aboard Policy

How to Stay Aboard the Ships

Stay Aboard Policy

Staying aboard the vessel is a privilege, not a right. Anyone staying aboard must remember the vessels are community spaces, not anyone's home.

General Requirements

Anyone wishing to stay aboard must:

  • Be a current member of the PSPG

  • Prior approval from the Marine Committee before staying aboard the first time

  • Show proficiency with opening and closing ship and boat check before being allowed to stay aboard.

  • Show understanding of emergency procedures

  • Occupy no more than one bunk

  • Do not use ship's food other than leftovers (Clearly label your own food to deter others from eating it unknowingly.)

  • Add your name to the Stay Aboard Calendar (link to Calendar in Member Only Section)

Be a Good Ship-keeper

Anyone staying aboard Gazela must exercise good ship-keeping by:

  • Ensuring a boat check is done daily (boat checklist)

  • Keeping the galley, salon, heads, hold, and focs’l neat and tidy

  • Trash with food must be taken off ship every night, placed by trash cans on Landing

  • Minding the usage of electrical appliances and lights: when lights are not in use they should be turned off; red lights and white lights shall not both be on at the same time.

  • Ensuring adequate ventilation by opening hatches, weather permitting

  • In Winter: Maintain minimum heating in galley and engine room necessary to prevent pipes freezing (only the forward head is to be heated for comfort)

  • Ensuring the vessels are locked at night and when no one is aboard

  • Fix any issues within capabilities of safely fixing (such as moving chafe gear). If there's an issue that cannot be handled alone, the Superintendent of Ships should be contacted.

  • Alerting Penn's Landing security of unauthorized people boarding vessels. DO NOT confront boarders at night - call Security

Be a Good Shipmate

All persons shall treat each other with understanding and respect and each shall recognize that they are all equals and that none among them make the rules governing staying aboard. In addition, the following general rules are to be followed:

  • All personal belongings should be contained in one's bunk(s) and foot locker.

  • Be mindful of making others uncomfortable with your actions, manner of dress, words, or noises while others are trying to sleep.

  • Lights in the focs’l are to be turned to red and quiet is to be observed between the hours of 2200 and 0700. Red lights are to be turned off at all other times.

  • Dishes, pots and pans must be washed in a timely manner, and food properly stowed.

Remember!

  • Do not return to the vessel intoxicated

  • No one is permitted in the rigging after hours except by specific direction

  • No guests will be permitted in the rigging without pre-approval by management

  • No overnight guests without pre-approval by management

  • Excessive noise will not be tolerated

  • Fighting, abusive language, or threats will not be tolerated

  • PSPG is not responsible for your personal property
